University of East London: Public Funds, Private Failures

The University of East London (UEL) entrusted private companies, Axelerant and MintTwist, with the delivery of digital products.

Unfortunately, these products failed to comply with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018, resulting in discrimination against disabled people, disabled students.

Despite being publicly funded, UEL allowed these companies to continue their work, even after being audited twice by the UK Government. Responsibility for this work lies with,

Efforts were made to provide Jim Benson with several opportunities to address these issues. However, these were not acted upon.

Evidence was requested from Ms Mitchison, as a regulated legal professional. A Judge determined that evidence had been withheld. It was also concluded that data protection laws were breached in the handling of this evidence.

Amanda Broderick is alleged to have been aware of the situation for the entire duration but is reported to have taken no action.

Adding to the controversy, a whistleblower has revealed that UEL is paying the expensive law firm Farrer & Co an astonishing £610 an hour as representation.
